Pop Rum Cute (ポプらむキュート) is a rounded, cute but slightly hard to read free Japanese font that you can download. The design point of this font is each letters are trying to fill up the square box as much as possible, creating the fat, bloated and congested sense, while at the same time sacrificing the readability.

This font comes with the standard Japanese characters and including more than 3000 kanji characters where 2900 plus of them are from JIS Kanji Level 1, and the rest from Level 2.

Hatsukoi Friends (初恋ふれんず) is a free font that emits the aura of a young girl experiencing the mood of first love. As you can see from the font design, it feels lightweight and feminine, and the subtle texture of the strokes kind of representing the shaky voice, the uncertainty and blushing face of a teenage girl falling in love for the first time.

Maboroshi no Nijimi Mincho

Maboroshi no Nijimi Mincho (幻ノにじみ明朝) is a free mincho font modified based on the open source font Source Han Serif. The outlines of the characters are textured and rugged, giving a sense of retro-ness, which is great for designs especially for greeting cards, posters and so on.

It comes with complete Japanese character sets and it’s licensed under SIL Open Font License, so it’s completely free to use on any projects.

Appli Mincho

Appli Mincho (アプリ明朝) is another free mincho font that was created based on the popular open source font Source Han Serif. There are a couple of enhancements done on this font:

  • The horizontal strokes are thickened, while making the vertical strokes thinner.
  • The edges and the serifs are soften and rounder

Below is the comparison of the two fonts: the top one being the original Source Han Serif, while bottom is the Appli Mincho. You can clearly see characters are softer and easier to read.

There are three fonts in total in the download package, where the other two has some subtle difference from the original Appli Mincho. Sadly it only comes with regular font weight. It would be great if there are more weights included. Well, that will definitely costing more efforts to do it.

Corporate Logo Maru (コーポレート・ロゴ丸) is a bold rounded font that you can download for free. The font was created with the base from Jikasei’s Genyuu Gothic, and replace it with the original hiragana and katakana character designs. Genyuu Gothic was designed based on open source font Source Han Sans.

Corporate Logo Maru comes with the standard hiragana and katakana, also most of the kanji characters. The font is license under SIL Open Font License, means you can use it for commercial works.

Ankoku Zonji (暗黒ゾン字) is the latest scary style free font series from Ankoku Koubou. The strokes of the font are thick and the spiky and uneven surface makes this font carrying the characteristics of being a horror design font. This font took the inspiration of the old time horror movie or the signage of the ghost houses.

Ronde-B Square (ロンド B) is a rounded squarish Japanese font free to download. The letter designs are rigid featuring high amount of straight lines, however soften by using rounded corners. This font might not be a good choice for smaller size displays.

Motoya’s Kosugi Maru is a free Japanese font set in rounded sans-serif style, with low stroke contrast and monospaced metrics. It was initially developed by MOTOYA for the Android platform, now it’s available as one of the first batch of Japanese fonts released under Google Fonts, where you can use it straightaway on your website.

Togalite (トガリテ) is a display style free Japanese font which comes with 6 font weight. The font was designed based off the popular open source font M+, the difference is that the edges of the characters are sharpened and protruding out, giving the sense of thorn.

The name Togalite is a combined word of French word “égalité” which means “balanced” and Japanese word “Togaru (尖る)” which means sharp edge.

Hime Mincho Shirayuki (姫明朝しらゆき) is a soft, feministic font free for download. This font was designed based on the story of the “Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs”: the hiragana is the Snow White, Katakana is the 7 dwarfs and the kanji is the Prince.

Overall the font gives a soft, pampered feel to it, so it’s suitable for designs targeting children and females. However, the free mini version comes with limited characters of kanji and also latin characters, but you can try this for personal use. FZ Imokenpi (FZイモケンピ) is a display style Japanese font free for download. The strokes of the characters were like being constructed with torn transparent tape. This font can be an interesting choice for typographic works that require some attention. It might not be a good choice for smaller font sizes as it will lose the finer details of the font design.
