Appli Mincho

Appli Mincho (アプリ明朝) is another free mincho font that was created based on the popular open source font Source Han Serif. There are a couple of enhancements done on this font:

  • The horizontal strokes are thickened, while making the vertical strokes thinner.
  • The edges and the serifs are soften and rounder

Below is the comparison of the two fonts: the top one being the original Source Han Serif, while bottom is the Appli Mincho. You can clearly see characters are softer and easier to read.

There are three fonts in total in the download package, where the other two has some subtle difference from the original Appli Mincho. Sadly it only comes with regular font weight. It would be great if there are more weights included. Well, that will definitely costing more efforts to do it.
